Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

On a whim we decided to do the Titanic Exhibit last Saturday at Marina Bay Sands.  Unlike all the other museums, this one does not allow photography AT ALL, so don’t bother bringing your newfangled bazillion megapix cameras because it will be useless.

The first thing that accosts you at the start of the exhibit is a photo-op of the ship’s bow.  We pose for 1 photo just to oblige the guy.

PHOTOGUY: “Ok now raise your arms like this!”

ME: ummm…. NO.

Ok, kidding aside.. the exhibit was awesome.  It’s divided into several rooms and it takes you from the inception to the final terrifying moments.  I loved how, along with each artifact, they tried to recreate how it felt like to be on board during those days: the opulence of first class, the spare accommodations in third.  Woven in with these were stories of passengers who were on that fateful trip.

What I loved most:

  • The Promenade really gives the illusion of being outdoors and staring at a starry sky.
  • Recreations of the suites, dining areas, and cabins.
  • The final room showing the Titanic ruins.. ethereal and ghostly and sad at the same time.

Meh:

  • The entrance tickets were made to look like a real Titanic ticket with an actual person’s name.  The person at the door told us to “look at the end of the exhibit to see if you survived or not” referring to a wall with a list of all passengers that showed who lived and died.  It felt like a tragic disaster being reduced to a treasure hunt game.
  • I hate that you couldn’t take photos.. what’s the deal with that?  The National Museum has exhibited mummies and Pompeii and they never banned photography..

In conclusion, the exhibit is so worth it.  You still have time, it’s on until April.  Tickets are reasonably priced at $21 per adult.
